The Weight of Racial and Cultural Stress

When people of color are subjected to experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination, and racism as a regular occurrence, it's important to recognize the emotional and mental toll this can take. Many BIPOC clients report feelings of low self-esteem, self-rejection, anxiety, or depression as a result. These chronic stressors, over time, can lead to poor health outcomes even when no single event stands out as traumatic on its own.

This kind of stress can show up as:

  • Hypervigilance or exhaustion from navigating predominantly white spaces

  • Self-doubt, internalized racism, or pressure to "represent" your community

  • Anxiety, depression, or a sense of cultural disconnection

  • Physical symptoms like tension, fatigue, or sleep issues linked to chronic stress

  • Generational patterns of survival and resilience passed down through family

A Culturally Grounded Approach

As a Vietnamese American therapist, I bring both lived experience and clinical training to this work. I prioritize cultural humility, meeting you where you are, without needing to over-explain your experience. I actively name the systems at play, including racism, colonialism, and generational trauma, rather than treating your stress as purely individual.

I have particular experience supporting Asian and Asian-American clients navigating family expectations, intergenerational dynamics, and the pressure to minimize one's own struggles. This work often overlaps with trauma processing, including EMDR and the Four Blinks Protocol, and with neurodivergent-affirming care, since cultural and cognitive differences can compound each other. Together, we'll work toward not just symptom relief, but a deeper reconnection with your own resilience, cultural identity, and sense of self.
